About This Call

Now in its seventh year, Art on the Atlanta BeltLine returns to bring visual art and performance to miles of the Atlanta BeltLine corridor. The largest temporary art project in the history of Atlanta, it seeks to include visual artists, performers, musicians and historic preservationists, placing working professionals alongside emerging artists. Visual and performing artists are invited to submit proposals for temporary works to be exhibited along the linear greenspace of the BeltLine corridor from September through November.

The Atlanta BeltLine is an emerging system of parks, trails, transit and economic development that reclaims mostly abandoned rail corridors. Proposed projects should reflect the historic, environmental, cultural, functional, urban design, and/or aesthetic aspects of the sites and should be well-researched, well-planned and feasible. Potential projects might include temporary art, sculptural or visual installations; gateway or entrance works; performance works including music, dance, theater and performance art; utilization of fences or screening devices; amenities for visitors such as benches, bike racks, shade structures; loan of existing artwork; murals; plantings or environmental works; and school or class projects. Interdisciplinary approaches, innovative uses of materials and new technologies are encouraged. Proposed materials shall be modestly priced and durable requiring minimal maintenance in an outdoor setting. All works must be designed to be safely removed at the end of the designated period or disintegrate safely into the environment. Works and performances not suitable for all ages or containing materials deemed dangerous, toxic, or hazardous to public safety will not be accepted.

Proposed projects will be presented in three sections of the Atlanta BeltLine: between Montgomery Ferry Road and Monroe Drive; between Monroe Drive and Irwin Street (Eastside Trail); and between Kirkwood Avenue and Memorial Drive in Reynoldstown. All exhibit space is outdoors. Submissions do not have to be site specific; following selection, artists will work with Atlanta BeltLine to select an exhibit location. Performance dates are scheduled for September 10 and 24; October 1, 2, 8, and 9. Awards up to $6,000 are available. Artists should incorporate a minimum of 20 percent of the total grant amount as an artist's fee. The average award in the previous year was $2,600, with amounts ranging between $500 and $6,000. The award covers design, fabrication, shipping, installation, maintenance, and de-installation. Installation period is June through August, with exhibition opening September 10 and de-installation by November 30. Submissions must include a one-sentence summary, contact information for all team members, biographical information or resumes, a written narrative (not to exceed 250 words), list of materials and installation guidelines, and detailed budget. Visual artists should submit at least three sketches showing scale, dimensions, and elevation, plus five images of previous work. Performing artists should submit a brief description and work sample on DVD or URL. Musicians may submit work samples on CD or URL. Up to five applications are allowed per artist.
