Art on Main

Aberdeen Downtown Association in conjunction with the Aberdeen Area Arts Council is seeking proposals from artists for Art on Main, a rotating outdoor sculpture exhibition. Eight sculptures will be selected to be sited along the sidewalks of Main Street in downtown Aberdeen, South Dakota. Works will be on view for 24 months, from Summer 2014 to Summer 2016. At the conclusion of the exhibition, one of the eight selected works will be purchased for inclusion in the City of Aberdeen's permanent collection. The purchase budget is up to $60,000, giving each selected artist at least a one in eight possibility of a purchase.

Eligibility is open to all professional artists and artist teams over the age of 18. Artworks must be durable, suitable for outdoors, and able to withstand the elements as well as interaction with pedestrians and the general public. Works may be functional or non-functional and must be available for purchase. Sculptures must be attached to a steel plate suitable for stable and flat fixture to existing steel embedded in the top surface of existing pedestals. The artist is responsible for transportation to and from the site and for installation. The City of Aberdeen will insure the selected works for the duration of the exhibition period. A commission of 20% will be taken from artwork sold to perpetuate the public art program. The artist is responsible for any maintenance and repairs to artwork during the exhibition, except for damage due to vandalism, theft, or misuse, which will be the city's responsibility.

Applications must be delivered by mail, by hand, or received electronically by April 18, 2014. Required materials include a completed application form, current resume (maximum two pages), list of professional references (minimum three, maximum five), a maximum of 10 digital images of recent relevant work, and an annotated image list with title, date, medium, dimensions, weight, installation method, and price for each image. Digital images must be JPG format at 72 DPI with dimensions between 800 x 600 and 1600 x 1200 pixels. Submit materials to Art on Main, Aberdeen Downtown Association, 514 S.
