About This Call

Art of the State is an annual juried exhibition open to Pennsylvania artists and craftspeople, held at The State Museum of Pennsylvania. Presented by The State Museum of Pennsylvania in cooperation with the Pennsylvania Heritage Foundation, the 57th Art of the State exhibition offers cash awards for selected entries in five categories: Painting, Work on Paper, Photography & Digital Media, Sculpture, and Craft.

The entry fee is $30 for up to 4 works of art. Submissions must include 1-4 images and/or 0-4 videos. The final deadline to submit entries is Friday, May 3, 2024 at 11:59 PM. Jury selection will occur from May 13 to June 10, 2024, with email notifications of results expected the week of June 17. Art delivery is scheduled for July 13-21, and the exhibition will be open from Sunday, September 8, 2024 until Sunday, January 5, 2025. A reception and awards ceremony will be held on Sunday, September 8. Art retrieval is scheduled for January 18-26, 2025.

Awards include First Place ($500), Second Place ($300), and Third Place ($200) in each of the five categories. Additional awards include the William D. Davis Memorial Award for Drawing ($250) and The State Museum Art Docents' Choice Award ($300). Category-specific requirements: Craft includes functional or decorative three-dimensional work in any media, including fiber arts. Painting includes two-dimensional media such as oil, acrylic, watercolor, encaustic, fresco, ink & wash, pastel, gouache, and spray paint. Photography & Digital Media includes traditional and digital photographs, photographs printed on metal, and time-based media (A.I.-generated art will not be accepted). Sculpture includes three-dimensional work using carved, molded, applied or constructed techniques. Work on Paper includes two-dimensional works created on paper such as drawing, collage, etching, lithograph, woodblock, screen print, serigraph, calligraphy, computer art on paper, graphic art, digital art print, digital collage, monotype, cut paper, and pastel. For three-dimensional work, artists can submit one image per work but may be asked to provide additional views. For digital media, artists must provide a media player, speakers, and screen for exhibition display, with media programmed to play on a continuous loop. Entry assistance is available by email and phone from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM Monday through Friday.
