Art of the State 2023

Art of the State is an annual juried exhibition open to Pennsylvania artists and craftspeople, held at The State Museum of Pennsylvania. Presented by The State Museum of Pennsylvania in cooperation with the Pennsylvania Heritage Foundation, the 56th Art of the State exhibition offers cash awards for selected entries in five categories: Painting, Work on Paper, Photography & Digital Media, Sculpture, and Craft.

The entry fee is $30 for up to 4 works of art. Artists may submit between 1 and 4 total samples, which can include images and/or videos. The final deadline to submit entries is Friday, May 5, 2023 at 11:59 PM. E-mail notifications of juror results will be sent the week of June 19, with a deadline to confirm information by July 5. Art delivery is scheduled for July 15-23. The exhibition will be open from Sunday, September 10, 2023 until Sunday, January 7, 2024, with art retrieval scheduled for January 20-28, 2024.

Awards include First Place ($500), Second Place ($300), and Third Place ($200) in each of the five categories. Additional awards include the William D. Davis Memorial Award for Drawing ($250) and The State Museum Art Docents' Choice Award ($300). Specific category requirements: Craft includes functional or decorative three-dimensional work; Painting includes two-dimensional media such as oil, acrylic, watercolor, encaustic, fresco, ink & wash, pastel, gouache, and spray paint; Photography & Digital Media includes traditional and digital photographs and time-based media (A.I.-generated art will not be accepted); Sculpture includes three-dimensional carved, molded, applied or constructed techniques; Work on Paper includes drawing, collage, etching, lithograph, woodblock, screen print, serigraph, calligraphy, computer art on paper, graphic art, digital art print, digital collage, monotype, cut paper, and pastel. For three-dimensional work, artists can submit one image per work but may be asked to submit additional views. For digital media works, artists must provide a media player, speakers, and screen for exhibition display, with media programmed to play on a continuous loop.
