About This Call

A visual art exhibit about Alzheimer's, Dementia, and Mental Health taking place in May 2019 at Imurj in Raleigh, NC. Imurj has partnered with Empathy Through Art, a non-profit, to use art in all its forms to tackle the issue of Alzheimer's and Dementia. The exhibit brings together artists, musicians, dancers, writers, sculptors, and more to share their work related to Alzheimer's and Dementia. Works about mental health and aging as a broader topic are also welcome. The art, music, stories, and conversations will be captured via a short film series and print magazine to increase awareness and empathy for Alzheimer's and Dementia. Works not accepted for the exhibit are still eligible to be included in print with full credit to the artist.

Artists submitting work have three opportunities: inclusion in the physical May exhibit at Imurj (2D and 3D art, printed poetry and stories, audio and video of performances); inclusion in the print magazine expected after May and distributed in and around Raleigh, NC and digitally; and a 5-10 minute presentation of experience with Alzheimer's/Dementia at the May Reception (North Carolina residents only). The exhibit runs May 3 - June 2, 2019. Opening Reception is Friday, May 3 from 5-10pm.

Eligibility: Artists of all mediums living in the United States. Application period: March 7 through April 14. Application fee: $20. Work sample requirements: 1-2 images, 0-2 audio files, 0-2 video files, 1-6 total samples. Limit two works per applicant. For 2D art, maximum size is 50 inches in either dimension and all works must be wired to hang. For 3D art, maximum weight is 90 lbs for pedestal/table display or 80 lbs for ceiling-hung works. Performance artists and spoken/written word artists must be US residents to submit video/audio/print, and NC residents to perform in-person. Each selected performer receives a 10-minute slot. Commission: 60% to artists, 20% to Empathy Through Art, 20% to Imurj. If the application fee provides a financial barrier, contact Kenneth Proseus at [email protected]. Imurj is a fully accessible venue and encourages anyone to apply.
