About This Call

Art of Inquiry is a juried exhibition showcasing up to 50 original works of art by talented artists of the Gainesville, Florida regional community. Established and emerging artists who reside in or have close ties to the Gainesville region are eligible to submit entries. The exhibition will be held at the Harn Museum of Art at the University of Florida from March 5 to July 7, 2019, in the Julia C. and Budd H. Bishop Gallery.

Eligibility: Artists must be 18 years or older and reside in or have close ties to the Gainesville, Florida region. The exhibition is open to two-dimensional and three-dimensional works of original art in most media, including painting, drawing, photography, print media, ceramic, sculpture, fiber and mixed media. Video art and jewelry are not eligible. Current Harn Museum of Art staff, active docents, interns and volunteers are not eligible. Current consignment artists working with the Harn Museum Store are not eligible. University of Florida faculty and staff may apply; University of Florida students may apply unless they are current Harn Museum of Art staff or active docents, interns or volunteers.

Submission Requirements: Each entry must be submitted online via CaFÉ by 11:59pm EST on October 22, 2018. Artists may submit up to 3 objects. The entry fee is $30 for the first object and $15 for each additional object. Each entry must include a high resolution digital image (at least 300 DPI and 1200 x 1800 pixels). Works must be existing objects completed in the last three years. Entries will be reviewed by two distinguished invited jurors: Matthew McLendon, Director and Chief Curator at The Fralin Museum of Art at The University of Virginia, and Jaime DeSimone, Associate Curator of Contemporary Art at the Portland Museum of Art. Selection criteria include artistic excellence, originality of design, and overall aesthetic presentation.

Awards and Events: Jurors will award ribbons for First Place, Second Place, and several Honorable Mentions. Winning entries will be featured in an accompanying exhibition brochure. There are no cash prizes. Selected artists will be invited to a private exhibition opening on March 3, 2019, and a Harn Member Party on April 12, 2019. Notification of acceptance will be sent via email on December 1, 2018.

Delivery Requirements: Two-dimensional artwork must be delivered ready to hang with hanging hardware (no sawtooth hangers) and must be no larger than 84"H x 60"W x 10"D. Three-dimensional artwork must be self-supporting, stable, weigh less than 60 pounds, and be no larger than 84"H x 40"L x 40"D. Accepted works must be delivered to the Harn Museum of Art on February 4-8, 2019 between 10:00am-12:00pm and 1:00pm-4:00pm. Artists are responsible for incoming and outgoing shipping or in-person delivery and insurance. Art must be picked up on July 10-12, 2019 between 10:00am-12:00pm and 1:00pm-4:00pm.
