Art of Accumulation

Art of Accumulation is an exhibition at the Cade Center for Fine Arts Gallery at Anne Arundel Community College that invites works engaging with the concept of accumulation through the combination and exploration of non-traditional materials, repetitive processes, and/or relationships between material, time, memory, and experience. The exhibition is open to all visual mediums.

The accumulation of memory, experience, and material over time is an inevitable aspect of life. While memory and experience have always been cumulative, we are now faced with an overflow of material due to more than 2 centuries of mass production. This has created opportunities for artists to use non-traditional materials gathered from everyday life. Historically, this is seen in the collages of Braque and Picasso, the Dadaist assemblages of Kurt Schwitters, and Robert Rauschenberg's Combines. Contemporary artists explore accumulation through repetitive material processes, as in the work of Yayoi Kusama, Sarah Sze, and Ann Hamilton, and through repurposing collected trash and recycled material to reference industrialization, throw away culture, and environmental issues.

Artists over 18 working in all media are eligible to apply. Submit up to 5 artworks with an artist statement for each work. Entry fee is $20. The entry deadline is March 6, 2024 at 11:59 p.m. MST. Selected artists will be notified by March 13. Artwork must be available from April to May 2024. Drop-off dates are April 15-17, with shipped artwork due by April 16. The exhibition runs April 24 – May 22, 2024, with a public reception and juror talk on May 1, 5-7pm. All accepted work must be ready to hang or display. Two-dimensional work must have braided picture wire on the back; fragile media should be under plexiglass. Installation art must be prepared by the artist or include easy-to-follow instructions. Artists are responsible for all shipping costs to and from the gallery. The gallery is located at 101 College Parkway, Arnold, MD 21012.
