Art + Movement

GearBox Gallery invites submissions to Art + Movement, a 2019 juried exhibition exploring how art made in the current divisive state of cultural, political, and religious perspectives will be regarded historically. The exhibition theme considers art movement both as a tendency or style in art with a specific common philosophy or goal followed by a group of artists during a restricted period, and as a principle of composition in art used to create visual tempo or beat.

Juror Maria Porges is an artist and writer who has taught at CCA in the Fine Arts graduate program since the late 1980s. Her critical writing has appeared in Artforum, Art in America, Sculpture, American Ceramics, Glass, the New York Times Book Review, and numerous exhibition catalogues. She founded the blog wordsaboutart.com and has written three artist's books, including Shortest Stories (2019), consisting of 100 microfictions paired with 100 collages.

Eligibility is open to artists over 18 living or working in Northern California. Artwork must be original, of any media, created between 2015 and 2019, and able to fit through a standard doorway. Works must be framed and ready to hang or display. The entry fee is $35 for up to 3 images; additional images cost $10 each (up to 6 total). Submissions must include title, medium, year, and dimensions. Artists may submit a statement relating their work to the exhibit theme. Accepted entries must be hand-delivered to GearBox Gallery in Oakland between noon and 4pm on Sunday, August 11, 2019. The juror will make final determinations on included work by August 12. Exhibition dates are August 15 – September 7, 2019. Notification of selections will be made by email on July 9, 2019. Awards include a Juror's Award (featured as guest artist in future exhibit) and GearBox Gallery Award (opportunity to exhibit in the Inner Room). Artwork must be for sale and cannot be removed during the exhibition. GearBox Gallery retains 40% of sale prices. Artists assume all liability for artwork during the show. Artwork must be picked up between noon and 4pm on Sunday, September 8, 2019; unclaimed work after 15 days becomes gallery property.
