About This Call

Art in Public Places (AiPP) seeks to commission a permanent large-scale work of art for the roundabout at Pine Nursery Community Park, located at 3750 N.E. Purcell in Bend, Oregon. The roundabout is at the main entrance to the park and the area available for artwork and landscaping is approximately 60 feet in diameter. The work of art will serve as an "identifying signature" for the new Pine Nursery Community Park. The general theme should represent the varied recreational experiences that people enjoy in the region. There are no restrictions on artistic interpretation; examples of existing roundabout sculptures in Bend range from traditional wildlife representations to abstract works to kinetic sculptures.

The work of art must be fabricated in durable, permanent, outdoor media that is safe, easily maintained, and has proven viability in public artworks. The committee will evaluate submissions based on artistic merit, the artist's past experience, and ability to work in large scale. Funds available for the commission shall not exceed $90,000. The completed and installed sculpture becomes the property of the Bend Metro Parks & Recreation District. The artist shall retain copyright and will grant Art in Public Places and Bend Metro Parks & Recreation District a license to display the work and create and distribute reproductions for archival or promotional purposes.

This is an open competition for professional artists residing in the Northwest United States, specifically Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, and Northern California. Teams of artists are welcome to apply. Submit a current resume, a total of 4 artwork images (noting medium, dimensions, location, and price), and a statement of interest expressing initial ideas for the roundabout artwork. Notification of finalists will occur in early March 2011, with presentation of models/proposals by finalists in May 2011 and selection in late May 2011. Installation is scheduled for early November 2011. Questions may be directed to Cate O'Hagan at [email protected].
