About This Call

The Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT), is seeking emerging public artists to create temporary art installations along the Beacon Hill Neighborhood Greenway and the Central Waterfront. Up to 12 artists will be selected to develop artworks that can be temporarily attached or applied to city-owned street or park furniture and infrastructure such as utility poles, street trees, walls, railings, and stair risers. The temporary artworks will inhabit city sidewalks and parks to offer passers-by a brief interruption in their day, eliciting a moment of surprise, contemplation, beauty or humor.

This call is open to emerging public artists living in Washington state who are over 18 years old and interested in working collaboratively in public settings. Applicants must have a documented track record of making art and interest in creating art in public places, but may or may not have formal art education. Applicants are not eligible if they have received a permanently sited public or private art commission of more than $10,000. Selected artists will receive a $1,500 stipend, paid in three installments: 40 percent upon acceptance of the final artwork proposal, 40 percent after documented installation, and 20 percent after documented de-installation and project summary delivery.

Artworks will be installed for a six-week period within the Beacon Hill Neighborhood Greenway corridor and/or locations along the Central Waterfront, including Waterfront Park, Piers 62/63, Marion Street pedestrian bridge, Pike Street Hill Climb, and SDOT infrastructure along Alaskan Way. Artworks must be designed to be easily installed and de-installed without causing permanent damage to city property, and must not distract drivers or obscure city signage. Application deadline: 11 p.m., Friday, May 3, 2013 (Pacific Daylight Time). Applicants must submit eight images of past artworks, a letter of interest, concept proposal, resume, and references. Two application workshops are offered April 8 and 22. Selected artists will be notified by May 31, 2013, with installation occurring in August 2013 and removal by September 30, 2013.
