About This Call

Call for large-scale sculptures to exhibit at Oxford Free Public Library in Oxford, Massachusetts. Up to five sculptures will be selected, with a $500 stipend per sculpture. Exhibition period: June 22 – September 29, 2019.

The library, located at 339 Main Street, is a sand-colored brick Queen Anne Style building constructed in 1902, situated on three-quarters of an acre with six large oak trees and manicured lawns. The exhibit is designed to enhance the library experience, bring public art to the citizens of Oxford, and provide an opportunity for artists to showcase their work. Artists are encouraged to visit the site prior to submitting proposals, as consideration will be given to requests for particular locations, though specific placement cannot be guaranteed.

Submissions must include high-resolution images of up to two sculptures or site-specific proposals. Sculptures must be large-scale, heavy, and capable of being anchored in a tree, to a base platform, or in the ground. Work must have been produced within the last four years and must be the property of the artist. All media must be safe for outdoor installation and suitable for extended outdoor exhibition and weather exposure. Sharp or pointed pieces should be avoided below 4 feet to prevent viewer injury. Selection will be based on quality, visual design, and experience of place in relationship to the architectural and social surroundings. Artists are encouraged to submit work with strong color or bright metal. Artists are responsible for transporting, installing, and removing their work, with limited volunteer assistance and heavy-duty machinery available on a limited scheduled basis. Once installed, sculptures must remain throughout the exhibition period. The organizers reserve the right to reject installation if any work deviates significantly from accepted proposals or poses a safety risk. Artists retain copyright interests in their artwork, with the exception that the presenter and its agents may reproduce images for marketing and reports.
