About This Call

The St. Michaels Public Art Project seeks a permanent public sculpture for the town of St. Michaels, Maryland to be positioned on the grounds of the St. Michaels Museum in St. Mary's Square. St. Michaels is a historic tourist town located on Maryland's Eastern Shore in Talbot County with approximately 1,094 residents. The town offers boating, sailing, kayaking, biking, walking, fine dining, and shopping, and hosts many festivals, parades, and a weekly seasonal farmer's market.

The artwork location is St. Mary's Square, the original center of St. Michaels as designated in the 1778 town plan. Across the street is the St. Michaels Museum with exhibits on early life in St. Michaels, particularly its history as a shipbuilding center and seafood processing hub. The artwork should be representative of St. Michaels history, particularly the unique culture of the people post-1800s; promote gathering by creating a feeling of engagement or interaction; evoke positive emotion; enhance the aesthetics of the grounds without disruption; depict one or more figures of half or full size (3-6 feet); and be consistent with the historic nature of the grounds. Materials should be durable, permanent, and require minimal maintenance.

Applicants must submit a professional resume/CV, letter of interest describing what interests them in the project and any related experience with three-dimensional work, draft vision statement, portfolio of 3-8 images of past or current projects, and contact information for 3 references. This opportunity is open to artists aged 18 years or older. The lead artist must be a resident of Maryland. Up to 5 applications are allowed per artist. Entry deadline: July 11, 2025 at 11:59 p.m. MDT.
