About This Call
The Art in Public Places program seeks an artist or artist team to create a site-specific commission project for the University of New Mexico Los Alamos branch campus. The Local Selection Committee is interested in artwork that connects the campus to the Los Alamos community and conceptually relates to science, technology, engineering and math.
The primary location for artwork is an east-facing floating wall on the façade of Building 5, measuring 8'1" x 17'9". The committee will consider glass, light, new media, relief, and tile in this location. Paint will not be considered due to environmental conditions. An alternative location of approximately 480 ft² adjoins the façade where freestanding artwork or elements installed on the floating wall will be considered. Media must be durable, low maintenance, permanent, suitable for exterior display, safe for both children and adults, and ADA compliant. At the selected artist's expense, artwork may require certification by an electrical, civil and/or structural engineer licensed in New Mexico and review by a professional fine art conservator.
This request is open to all artists or artist teams who are legal residents of New Mexico. Faculty and staff of the University of New Mexico are not eligible. $42,750 is available for the project, including all fees and expenses such as materials, equipment, labor, permits, engineering documents, insurance, taxes, travel, installation, shipping, identification plaque, and documentation. An additional $7,000 is available for site preparation and hardscaping through the University of New Mexico Los Alamos branch campus.
Submissions must include a letter of interest (no longer than 3000 characters), a current chronological resume or curriculum vitae, and ten images of previously completed work with complete citations. Up to five finalists will be invited to submit a formal proposal and three-dimensional maquette. Finalists will receive a $1000 honorarium and a travel stipend based on distance. The finalist presentation is scheduled for June 2012, with artwork completion and installation targeted for July 2013.
