About This Call

Art in Public Places seeks to commission a permanent large-scale work of art for the roundabout at Mt. Washington Drive & Shevlin Park Road in Bend, Oregon. This is an open competition for professional artists residing in the Northwest United States, specifically Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, and Northern California. Teams of artists are welcome to apply.

The roundabout is located at the intersection of Mt. Washington Drive & Shevlin Park Road, the primary access to the Central Oregon Community College Culinary Center and nearby neighborhoods. The location receives over 20,000 cars passing daily. The work of art must be fabricated in durable, permanent, outdoor media that is safe, easily maintained, and has proven viability in public artworks. The roundabout requires a large-scale work of art with a scale of 20 feet or higher. There are no restrictions on artistic interpretation; the committee will evaluate submissions based on artistic merit, the artist's past experience, and ability to work in large scale.

Funds available for the commission shall not exceed $100,000. The completed and installed sculpture becomes the property of the City of Bend. The artist shall retain copyright and will grant Art in Public Places and the City of Bend a license to display the work and create and distribute reproductions for archival or promotional purposes. Application materials must be submitted electronically by midnight Mountain Time on November 28, 2011. Required materials include a current resume, 4 artwork images (with medium, dimensions, location, and price noted), and a statement of interest expressing initial ideas for the roundabout project. Questions may be directed to Marcelene Trujillo at [email protected]. Project timeline: Notification of finalists in early December 2011, presentation of models/proposals by finalists in January 2012, selection in early February 2012, and installation in summer 2012.
