About This Call
The Tarpon Springs Public Art Committee is seeking designs for Phase I of its Art Bike Rack Project. This phase will place artist-designed bike racks primarily along the City's Art and History Trail. The call is for unique, original designs only; manufacture will be administered by the TSPAC. Bike rack designs must accommodate two to four bicycles, at least one on each side of the rack, similar to traditional "U" shaped racks, and represent the unique aesthetic and cultural identity of Tarpon Springs and the neighborhoods in which they will be installed.
Bike racks must have a minimum dimension of 3' x 4' (w x h) and may not exceed 4' x 7' (w x h). Designs must accommodate bicycles upright by their frames, enable the frame and one wheel to be secured using a standard u-lock, provide locking points between 1' and 3' above ground, include no sharp edges or safety hazards, and provide a gap near the bottom for pedal clearance. Bike racks will be fabricated using 1", 2", and 3" diameter steel tube in both square and round stock. Designs cannot directly advertise or advocate for any particular entity or organization and must be appropriate for use in the public domain. Designs that encourage "wheel bending type" bicycle parking will be disqualified.
A jury composed of local arts advocates, bicycle advocates, community stakeholders, City representatives, and the TSPAC will select winning designs based on creativity, artistic merit, technical proficiency, compatibility with installation sites, functionality, long-term maintenance, durability, and public safety. Selected designs will be produced with the intention of replicating designs as closely as possible, but the TSPAC reserves the right to modify designs as necessary for fabrication. Honorarium is $500 per design for the first installation, and $300 for each replication installed. The design becomes the property of the City of Tarpon Springs. No fabrication skills are necessary; the call is for designs only. The competition is open to all artists age 18 and above. Submission deadline is June 30, 2016. Winners will be notified August 31, 2016, with installation beginning April 2017. For further information, contact Denise Manning at (727) 943-4922, ext. 10, or [email protected].
