Art Bench Sculptors Phase VI

Art Bench Sculptors Phase VI is a public art competition seeking designs for custom benches to be installed at four locations in The Woodlands, Texas. Through a partnership with The Woodlands Township and underwriter funding, up to three semi-finalists will be selected for each location in a preliminary selection process. Each semi-finalist will receive a $300 stipend paid on May 6, 2024. One finalist per location will be chosen to construct an art bench and will receive $10,000 total ($5,000 upon execution of Artist Agreement and $5,000 upon delivery and acceptance).

Art benches must be constructed of highly durable commercial-grade materials suitable for outdoor, hot, humid, semi-tropical environments for at least ten years. Bench seat height must be 16-19 inches above grade, designed to accommodate at least 3 people, and capable of supporting a minimum load of 400 pounds. Materials may include iron, steel, stainless steel, copper, aluminum, bronze, natural stone, glass, HDPE plastic, fiberglass, concrete, wood, or combinations thereof. All designs must be approved by The Woodlands Township, Howard Hughes Corporation, and The Woodlands Commercial Standards Committee. The seating area must be smooth, free of sharp edges, heat-resistant, and comfortable for adults and children.

Four bench locations are available: North Shore Park A (new, water-facing), North Shore Park B (new, park center), Town Green Park South end (replacement), and Rob Fleming Park (new, pond view). The application deadline is April 9, 2024. Entry fee is $25 for the first design and $5 per additional design, with up to three designs per location allowed. Semi-finalists will be notified by May 6, 2024, finalists by June 8, 2024, and delivery and installation must be completed by September 15, 2024. An installation ceremony will occur in October 2024.
