About This Call
The City and County of Honolulu Commission on Culture and the Arts is commissioning two temporary outdoor sculptures for Thomas Square, located at 925 South Beretania Street, Honolulu, Hawai'i 96814. This Request for Proposals is open to all artists or artist teams who are residents of Hawai'i and are qualified to work for the City and County of Honolulu. Artists may submit proposals of either existing finished work or conceptual unfinished work. The artist shall loan the artwork to the City and County for public display and retain title to the artwork at all times during the term of the agreement. The awarded budget for each artwork is not to exceed $15,000, inclusive of the artist fee, design, fabrication, installation, loan fee, travel, and insurance.
The desired theme of the selected artworks is to reflect the concept of Aloha ʻĀina or "love for the land." The concept is rooted in a deep respect and reverence for all living things, defining a mutually-beneficial relationship between the ʻāina (land) and kānaka (humans). The artwork must be made of outdoor durable material, be free-standing at a minimum height of 5' tall, and be installed on a 7' x 7' concrete pad. Installations must be fabricated from materials appropriate for public display in an unguarded, exterior environment, with the ability to withstand environmental factors and interactions with the public.
Eligibility is open to all artists or artist teams who are residents of Hawai'i and are qualified to work for the City and County of Honolulu. All artist applicants must attest that they are eighteen years of age or older and that the materials submitted are authentic representations of their work. To qualify to work for the City and County of Honolulu, artists must be registered with the City's Vendor Self Service System and obtain a Vendor Number. To be awarded the commission, the artist must be registered to do business in the State of Hawaii and be deemed compliant on the State of Hawaii Compliance Express system. Applications must be submitted through the CallforEntry.org online application system by May 16, 2021 at 7:59 pm Hawaii Standard Time. The application requires a letter of interest, professional resume, references, project proposal, preliminary budget and timeline, project illustrations, and up to six additional visual support materials. The final selection will be made by the Commission on Culture and the Arts at their meeting in May 2021.
