About This Call

The Tarpon Springs Public Art Committee (TSPAC) seeks to commission a new artwork for the Sponge Docks Roundabout at the west end of Dodecanese Boulevard in Tarpon Springs, Florida. The artwork should create focus, entice Sponge Docks' visitors to the west end, and celebrate the rich culture of the city. All styles will be considered.

The artwork must be durable, low maintenance, and appropriate for the location. Artists should consider the location in relation to vehicular and pedestrian traffic, as well as existing trees on the site. The artwork must have a minimum offset of six (6) feet from the edge of the inside travel lane. Moving parts, lights, or auditory devices cannot be directed at, or be distracting to, motorists, bicyclists, or pedestrians. The artwork must be structurally sound and meet applicable standards of the Florida Building Code regarding foundation and wind loading (150 mph); final artwork will need to be engineered and stamped by a registered Florida engineer. Materials must meet the demands of a subtropical climate with sea salt air. A non-graffiti coating is recommended. The artist will provide a two-year warranty on materials and craftsmanship. Artwork containing advertising of any kind will not be considered.

A wide variety of media and forms will be considered, including functional elements such as seating and shade, artwork integrated into the existing architecture of the Roundabout, free-standing sculpture, and other types of art. Submissions should include a one-to-two page artist's resume, ten images depicting the artist's body of work with numbered annotations, and a one-to-two page proposal explaining how the artist's style and experience will complement the project and site. Work sample requirements: 10 images (required), up to 2 audio files, and up to 2 video files. The TSPAC will narrow submissions to up to five finalists who will be asked to provide final designs with materials, specifications, cost breakdowns, and timelines. Finalists will be invited for a site visit and will receive a $1,000 honorarium.
