Art Around Town Sculpture Show

The Town of Carbondale, CO Public Art Commission is seeking 15 outdoor street sculptures for the annual rotating "Art Around Town" show. The show is located on Main Street, the Rio Grande Trail, and the library, with sculptures on display for one year.

Applicants must consider durability of materials and weather-proofing for Carbondale's fluctuating climate from intense cold and snow to heat. Materials should be highly durable and low maintenance. Sculptures will be located in high pedestrian and biking areas, requiring consideration for height, shape, and sharp objects protruding. The Town of Carbondale has a strict outdoor lighting code, so sculptures will not be allowed to be illuminated. All sculptures will be placed on random sized chunks of Colorado Yule Marble with a custom steel plate adhered to the top. Sculptures will be tack welded to the steel plate, so every sculpture must arrive for installation with a steel plate attached to the bottom. Artist must be present for both installation and de-installation of the sculpture.

A Public Works installation crew will assist with welding, lifting, equipment, labor, and placement. Selected artists will receive a $900 honorarium at installation in May. The community will vote on "Best in Show" and an additional $1,000 honorarium will be paid to the winner. An Artists Reception and Art Walk will be held on June 4, 2020, with approximately 125-200 community members participating. Installation dates are May 18–June 3, 2020, and removal dates are May 1–May 15, 2021. Applicants must submit up to six digital images showing all angles of the sculpture and base, along with detailed installation information including height, width, weight, base dimensions, points of contact, and a sketch of the base shape. There is no application fee.
