About This Call
MidPen Housing Corporation is commissioning an artist or design team to interpret the history of the Aptos Blue site and develop a unique display for a new 40-unit affordable housing complex. The artist will create work that encourages residents and the public to engage with stories of the property's past, particularly The Castro House, a historic farmhouse being renovated to serve as the community center.
The Castro House will contain property management, resident services, a community kitchen, computer lab, after-school programs, and Mental Health Services Act services. The artist has freedom in choosing media and strategy, and it is preferred that historical interpretations be integrated in several locations with display modules both indoors and in the garden area. Artworks must be durable and compatible with public access and the multiple functions of the community center. The selected artist will have access to oral histories collected by the Santa Cruz Historic Resources Commission and the Aptos History Museum, and may salvage materials from the demolition of the 137-year-old Castro House to incorporate into the work. Budget: $20,000, including design, production, and installation.
Eligibility is limited to artists living in California. Submit 3 to 6 images of past work with descriptions, title, date, medium, location, and dimensions; a current resume (limited to past five years if applicable); two professional references with physical address, job title, email, and phone number; and an optional artist statement demonstrating stance toward public art or relevant work experience. Selection will be based on merit of past work, appropriateness of medium to a community center setting, and interest or experience in creating functional art in collaboration with housing agencies and landscape architects. Artists with experience in museum studies, display, and installation are encouraged to apply. Project timeline: Design in March 2013, production April–July 2013, installation September 2013.
