Aperture Portfolio Review

Aperture's Portfolio Review is held twice yearly to highlight recent work deserving greater recognition. Participating artists are considered for the publishing and exhibition activities of the foundation. The review allows Aperture's editors to discover work they might otherwise not see.

When examining portfolios, editors consider whether the work is new (created in the last five years), carries a consistent theme throughout, demonstrates strong composition and use of color or tone, makes appropriate technical and presentation choices, and takes an innovative or unique approach to the subject matter. At the culmination of each review, editors choose one winning portfolio as the Portfolio Pick. When compelled by the quality of competition, additional portfolios may be selected as Honorable Mentions. Images from Portfolio Picks and Honorable Mentions are showcased on the Aperture website with artist biographies and notes explaining the editors' selection. All portfolios are featured online for approximately six months and remain accessible in Aperture's online archives. All picks are announced in the e-newsletter, which reaches nearly 15,000 photographers, writers, critics, and other members of the Aperture community.

Portfolios and book proposals are accepted twice yearly during January and July review periods. Submissions must come directly from artists, not galleries or representatives. Entrants must be current, paid subscribers of Aperture magazine. For the winter 2007 Portfolio Review, work must be submitted online by Friday, January 12, 2007. Entrants will be contacted by the end of March. Submissions should include 15 images, resume/CV, a statement of up to 1,000 characters about the work or proposed book project, and the Aperture magazine subscriber number.
