About This Call
Santa Monica Cultural Affairs and the Annenberg Community Beach House invite proposals for group exhibitions as part of the Beach=Culture program, a year-round series of temporary exhibits, concerts, talks, readings, and artist residencies. Three exhibitions will be selected for 2019, with display periods of four months each. Proposals are invited for the following timeframes: Late January–April 2019, May–August 2019, or Early September–December 2019. The Annenberg Community Beach House is celebrating its tenth anniversary in 2019; proposals are encouraged to make connections to the Beach House and concepts of commemoration, shared memory, or celebration in unique or innovative ways.
Eligibility is limited to group exhibitions with three or more emerging and established artists, photographers, or artist collectives based in Southern California. Solo shows and proposals from artists outside the Southern California region will not be considered. The selected curator(s) will receive a $1,500 curatorial honorarium and will be responsible for managing, producing, and executing the exhibition content in a professional manner. Santa Monica Cultural Affairs will cover installation and de-installation by a professional art handling service, label and didactic text printing, exhibition postcard design and printing, outreach and marketing, and an opening reception with light refreshments. The gallery space consists of a central hallway with 9-foot high white walls, approximately 100 linear feet of total wall space, adjustable ceiling-mounted track lighting, and two lighted display cabinets (4ft.w x 6ft.h x 2ft.d). All artwork must be framed and ready to install, wall-mountable (except for display cabinet items), as there is no space for free-standing artwork.
Applications are due Monday, December 31st, 2018 by 10:59 PM PST/11:59 PM MST. Submissions must include a proposed exhibition narrative (800-word limit), a list of all participating artists with websites if available, resumes (2 pages per person) with three professional references, and up to 16 images of the artwork in JPEG or PNG format. Electronic submissions via CaFÉ are required. There is no application fee. Selected curators will be notified by mid-January 2019. Proposals will be evaluated based on the strength and clarity of the artists' body of work, demonstrated organizational experience, unique perspectives and innovative narratives connected to the Beach House's tenth anniversary, and the presentation of an actionable, ready-to-hang proposal for the gallery space.
