About This Call
The Salt Lake City Arts Council's Public Art Program is seeking to commission an artist or artist-led team to create an iconic public art installation for Glendale Park, the City's newest regional park on the West Side. The selected artist or team will develop their design in close collaboration with West Side residents, who have expressed a desire for an artwork that fosters a sense of community and belonging and reflects their shared values. The resulting artwork should authentically represent the West Side's culture, history, and people, establishing it as a landmark for both the city and the communities it will serve.
Glendale Park is a 21-acre regional park—the largest public lands investment in Salt Lake City in more than 60 years—located on the former site of Raging Waters water park and adjacent to Glendale Neighborhood Park. The park is part of a larger green space spanning over 100 acres, including the Jordan River Parkway, 17th South River Park, and Glendale Golf Course. Phase 1 construction is expected to be completed by Summer 2025 and will include an all-abilities playground, basketball court, pavilion, multi-use pathways, community plaza, and lawn. Phase 2 improvements will include a skating ribbon, climbing features, community gathering spaces, multi-use trail system, hilltop overlook, skate park, dog park, amphitheater, and Jordan Riverbank development. Several locations within the park have been identified as suitable for the artwork, or artists may propose another location subject to feasibility review.
The selected artist and/or team will collaborate with the project's design team to integrate the artwork into the park's landscape architecture and implement a maximum of 3 community-centered engagement activities to inform the final design. Artists from outside Utah are welcome to collaborate with local Utah artists to help lead and facilitate the community engagement component. Work sample requirements: 5-10 images and 0-2 videos. Entry deadline: August 15, 2024 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Project budget: $425,000. Eligibility: National.
