About This Call
Since 1996, the American Tapestry Alliance has sponsored a biennial, juried exhibition highlighting the best of international contemporary handwoven tapestry. The exhibition showcases professional and amateur tapestry artists working within traditional definitions of tapestry as well as those exploring core principles of the medium in conjunction with alternative processes and techniques.
American Tapestry Biennial 15 will be on view at the Epiphany Center for the Arts in Chicago, IL from August 1, 2025, through September 26, 2025. Jurors include Crystal Gregory, Associate Professor of Fibers at the School of Art and Visual Studies, University of Kentucky, and Poppy Delta Dawn, Assistant Professor of Fibers at the University of Kansas, Lawrence. A catalog will accompany the exhibition.
Applicants may submit up to three separate works for consideration. Entry fee is $45 for American Tapestry Alliance members and $70 for non-members. Membership is not required to enter. Two awards will be given: First-place Teitelbaum Award ($300) and Second-place Teitelbaum Award ($200), both for technical proficiency in tapestry weaving. Entry is open to all artists who design and weave their own tapestries individually or collaboratively. Artists from any location may apply. Work must be handwoven, weft-faced tapestry using discontinuous weft and tapestry techniques including plain weave, twill weave, rya, soumak, and pulled warp. Artists incorporating additional processes and materials are encouraged to apply as long as tapestry is the primary medium. Tapestries may be woven using traditional or non-traditional materials and can be two or three-dimensional. Artists are responsible for shipping work to and from the exhibition venue, including any applicable customs requirements or fees.
