About This Call
The City of San Jose Public Art Program, in conjunction with the Department of Public Works, is seeking an experienced artist to create a public art project for the new Alviso Storm Pump Station. This opportunity is open to individual artists or artist-led teams working or living in the following counties: Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Monterey, San Mateo, San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa, Solano, Sacramento, Sonoma, San Joaquin, Stanislaus, Napa, Yolo, and Marin. All applicants must have all necessary documentation and permits to work in the United States at the time of submittal. One artist or artist team will be selected for the project.
The Alviso Storm Pump Station is an upgrade to the existing stormwater management system in the area. The site is located at the northeast corner of Gold and Catherine Streets, near a residential neighborhood, adjacent to the Lower Guadalupe River Trail and the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge. The most visible feature to the public will be approximately 240 linear feet of wall or fence along the two street-facing sides of the site. Public art should enhance the experience of area residents, visitors, and passers-by. Given the site's relationship to the local environment and proximity to the Lower Guadalupe River Trail and wildlife refuge, it is desirable for the art project to address environmental themes, particularly stormwater as it relates to the site and nearby wetlands area. The successful project will be made of durable materials suited to an outdoor urban location.
The total available funding for this public art project is up to $81,000, divided as follows: $10,000 for design development, up to $65,000 for fabrication and installation, and a mandatory $6,000 contingency for unanticipated costs. The artist selected is expected to design, fabricate, and install the public art project within the given budget and attend all necessary meetings. The project schedule includes artist selection and contracting from February to March 15, 2015; research and concept development from March to April 2015; presentation of concept proposal in April 2015; presentation of schematic and design development from June to September 2015; and installation and project completion in October 2016. The artist must be available to work with the design team during March to June 2015. Submittal deadline is February 18, 2015 by 10:00 PM PST.
