About This Call

The City of Altamonte Springs seeks a professional artist to design and produce a new monument sign at Lake Lotus Park to represent the Altamonte Springs Science Incubator (AS2I) program. The sign must mention program sponsors Duke Energy and AdventHealth and have the ability to add and remove future sponsor names. The budget for the project is up to $20,000, which includes artists' fees, travel, insurance, documentation, design and installation-related expenses including permitting, plans, engineering (if required), licensed contractor/subcontractors (if required), infrastructure, fabrication of the art installation, and all additional project-related fees.

The AS2I is an innovative program promoting career readiness in high-tech, high-demand fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). It offers real-world, hands-on activities and experiences for Seminole County middle and high school students who visit Lake Lotus Park during field trips to participate in hands-on experimentation, data collection, and career opportunity sessions.

The City will select artwork based on qualifications, quality of past work, appropriateness of the proposal, and probability of successful completion. Key selection criteria include: quality and originality of the proposed artwork; suitability in scale, material, form and content for the community and physical environment with majority of fabrication completed off-site; durability to withstand Florida's subtropical climate with hot, humid conditions, intense sun, seasonal heavy rains, and hurricane-force winds, with compliance to the Florida Building Code; safety and public liability considerations; and incorporation of thematic elements of STEM, the AS2I program, and current sponsors. The sign will not be lit. The design must ensure that addition or removal of sponsor names or logos is easily facilitated without negatively impacting aesthetics.

Applicants must have experience with commercial signage or public art projects with similar budget and scale. Application requirements include a professional résumé, letter of interest outlining approach, minimum three professional references for public art/signage projects, and an image portfolio of completed artwork (minimum 3, maximum 10 images in JPEG format). Following selection of three shortlisted artists or artist teams, the City will pay a $500 stipend to develop a scope of work, proposed outcomes, project calendar, and budget. This opportunity is open to professional artists working in three-dimensional signage. The deadline for submissions is October 28, 2024 at 11:59 p.m. MDT.
