About This Call

Art in Public Places, a non-profit organization that has donated public art throughout Bend, Oregon since 1973, is seeking artists for a public art commission at Alpenglow Community Park. This new 37-acre community park is expected to open by summer 2022 and will provide recreation activities for people of all ages and abilities while retaining natural characteristics of the high desert landscape, including Ponderosa Pine and Juniper trees and a basalt ridge. The park is located on SE 15th Street, a half mile north of Knott Road, just north of Caldera High School.

The sculpture location is in the large native grass area west of the event pavilion, serving as a focal point visible from various vantage points throughout the park. The total project budget shall not exceed $130,000, including permit fees, stamped engineering drawings, subcontractors, transportation and installation. Artists must submit six digital images of completed past works from the last 12 years showcasing sculptures, installations and outdoor spaces, along with a one-page letter of interest describing their interest in the project and relevant comparable projects. Finalists will receive a $750 stipend for travel and model materials and will be asked to submit references, a detailed budget and a conservation maintenance plan.

This is an open competition for professional artists residing in the Northwest and Southwest United States, specifically Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, California, Arizona, Texas, New Mexico, Wyoming, Colorado and Utah. Artist teams are welcome. The committee will evaluate submissions based on artistic excellence, innovation, interactivity, originality and the work's ability to enhance the natural landscape. Artists must demonstrate experience with public art projects, materials suitable for outdoor settings, site-specific design, and collaboration with architects, engineers, fabricators and administrative staff. The work must be durable, weather and vandal resistant, and not climbable. Large scale work or multiple sculptures are required. The park welcomes kinetic or solar-powered elements and is open to various mediums and techniques, including sculptures with solar-powered lighting integrated into the overall installation and project budget. Application deadline: October 21, 2021 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Notification of finalists: Early November 2021. Artist presentation of models/proposals in Bend: Early January 2022. Commission selection: Early February 2022. Installation: Late Fall 2022.
