Alley Aerial Sculpture (Decatur, Alabama)

The Alabama Center for the Arts Foundation Urban Art Committee in partnership with the Decatur Downtown Redevelopment Authority and other community partners is seeking qualifications from experienced and innovative artists or artist teams to design, fabricate and install an aerial public art sculpture in a pedestrian alleyway located in Decatur, Alabama's downtown. The permanent public art installation will transform the alleyway into a visually engaging and dynamic public space, contributing to the cultural and aesthetic identity of the area.

Project goals include enhancing the visual experience of the alleyway through creative use of the aerial space, creating a safe, durable, and weather-resistant permanent installation that engages viewers from multiple vantage points, reflecting the unique character, culture, and history of the neighborhood and broader community, and activating the alley as a welcoming pedestrian space. The alleyway is located between Moulton Street and Johnston Street SE adjacent to the Alabama Center for the Arts Student Dormitory, City of Decatur Parking Deck, Downtown Decatur Fairfield by Marriott and local shops and restaurants. Overhead utility lines in the area have been buried and structural considerations will be addressed in collaboration with the selected artist, city engineers and planners.

This RFQ is open to professional artists or artist/design teams with demonstrated experience in large-scale public art installations. Preference will be given to artists with experience in aerial or suspended sculptures. Applicants should submit a letter of interest (maximum 2 pages) describing artistic approach and interest in the project, current resume for all team members if applicable, portfolio of up to 10 digital images of relevant past work with descriptions, and 3 professional references with contact information. Entry fee is $10.00. Budget to be determined after consultation with chosen artist/design team.
