About This Call
The Coronado Library invites artists of all ages to participate in Alice: Illustrating Wonderland, a special summer exhibit celebrating 160 years of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Artists are invited to reimagine the whimsy and wonder of Lewis Carroll's timeless tale by choosing a character or scene that inspires them—from the Mad Hatter's tea party to Alice's encounter with the Queen of Hearts—and creating a two-dimensional masterpiece. At least 10 pieces from each age category will be featured in the exhibit alongside 160 beautifully illustrated editions of the book.
The exhibition is open to all artists and student artists of all ages from Southern California, with three age categories: Young Creators (Ages 6–11), Teen Visionaries (Ages 12–18), and Adult Artists (Ages 19+). Each participant may submit up to two artwork pieces for judging, with a maximum of five total entries. Accepted mediums include traditional (pencil, ink, watercolor, acrylic, oil, etc.), digital art, and mixed media, all in two-dimensional format. Original artwork must not exceed 18" x 24" (45cm x 60cm) and should be able to be mounted or framed for display. Digital submissions should be high-quality images (JPEG or PNG, at least 300 DPI, no larger than 10 MB). All artworks must be original and created by the submitting artist; any form of plagiarism will result in disqualification.
Prizes will be awarded to winners in each age category, and honorable mentions may be given to noteworthy entries. Selected artworks may be featured in a virtual or physical exhibition, publication, or on social media with credit to the artist. Winners will be notified on April 21, 2025. Artists are responsible for transporting artwork to the Coronado Public Library at their own expense and risk; all selected art must be delivered by May 5, 2025. The exhibit runs May 19 - August 31, 2025, with artwork pick-up September 2-5, 2025. There is no application fee. Judging criteria: Creativity and originality (40%), Artistic skill and technique (30%), Relevance to theme (20%), and Overall presentation and impact (10%).
