About This Call

The City of Albuquerque Public Art Program is seeking artwork for the Albuquerque Greyhound Bus Station, located on First Street in downtown Albuquerque. The project involves two large cast-in-place gray concrete transit benches with serpentine backrests facing west along First Street, and a plaza area to the east of the benches in front of the Station's main entrance. The plaza is surfaced in crusher fines with recently planted oak trees and exterior electrical wiring that may be used for lighting.

The artwork should address the existing transit benches in conjunction with the plaza area, bringing added vitality and recognition to this important transit hub. The design should demonstrate awareness of scale appropriate to the architectural integrity of the Bus Station. The work must be fabricated in durable, permanent outdoor media safe and easily maintained in Albuquerque's southwestern climate. Acceptable materials include color, ceramics, metal, fiberglass, lighting and light fixtures, sculpture, and newer materials with proven viability in public works. LED lighting technology is appropriate if vandal-proof equipment placement is incorporated.

This is an open competition for artists residing in the western states: Arizona, Colorado, California, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. The project budget is $75,000, funded through General Obligation Bonds for Transit - 1% for the Arts. Five finalists will each receive a $500 stipend to create a model or drawings for presentation to the Selection Committee. The Selection Committee will award the project to one artist from the five finalists. Submissions must include a letter of intent, current resume, images of five past projects (up to ten slides total), and a basic budget outline. The copyright will be shared between the City of Albuquerque and the artist, though artists may use images of their work for their own purposes.
