About This Call

The City of Albuquerque Arts Board and Mayor Tim Keller seek proposals for a large-scale, mural-like work of art that showcases and celebrates the resilience of the people, history, culture, and city. Full colored imagery that is uplifting, celebratory, and inspires a desire to learn more about Albuquerque will be favorably received. The theme can reflect an energetic, authentic, honest narrative of Albuquerque's social and cultural attributes. All styles and technical approaches will be considered for successful expression of the theme.

The 1st Floor Lobby area wall is approximately 8' x 24'. Mural designs must be portable and attached to a sturdy, lightweight substrate that can be mounted to the existing interior wall. Up to six 4' x 8' panels are suggested, but artists are not restricted to rectangular formats; unique outline shapes or borders are permissible. $15,000 is available from the 1% for Public Art Program for the selected artist or artist team. Up to four finalists will be paid a $300 design stipend upon selection to develop a site-specific artwork design.

Eligibility is open to individual artists or artist teams who are current residents of the greater metropolitan area of Albuquerque, including all of Bernalillo County and Rio Rancho. Submissions must include a letter of intent (not exceeding two pages or 500 words), up to 10 digital images of past large-scale or mural-style artwork, an annotated image key describing the pictured site and scale with media and application process details, and a current resume or CV (three pages maximum). Do not submit a proposed design; this is a Request for Qualifications based on artistic style and approach. Four finalists will be selected and notified by March 16, 2018. Finalist proposals are due by April 16, 2018, with a competition winner selected by April 18, 2018. The winner will begin work immediately upon execution of the Art Commission contract in late April 2018. Questions may be directed to Sherri Brueggemann at (505) 768-3833 or [email protected].
