About This Call

Bunnell Street Arts Center presents an Artist in Residence program for International, US, or Alaska artists to create artwork exploring community engagement and creative placemaking. Proposals may address relevant themes such as accessibility, equity & inclusion, decolonization, sustainability, anti-racism, skills sharing and exchange, community wellbeing, connection between local and global communities, and more. Artist-led projects may be in any media or genre, including visual arts, performing arts, social and civic practice, ephemeral art, moving image, music composition/performance, literary arts, movement, theatre, or other.

Bunnell Street Arts Center is a multidisciplinary arts center located in a landmark building overlooking Kachemak Bay and the Kenai Mountains in south-central Alaska on the traditional lands of the Dena'ina and Sugpiaq people. Founded in 1991, Bunnell's mission is to generate artistic inquiry, innovation and equity to strengthen the physical, social and economic fabric of Alaska. The center features a premier exhibition and performance space on the main floor that doubles as an open studio for Artists-in-Residence, with private rooms and private baths for artists located upstairs in a spacious apartment with a shared kitchen and living area.

Residencies are one month in length and scheduled by mutual agreement between the artist and Bunnell in 2022 (generally not available June, July, or August). The program accepts 1-6 artists in residence at a time and is open to mid-career artists. The $25 application fee includes a $2000 stipend for one month, up to $1000 value round-trip coach travel to Homer, lodging in a private room with private bath, and $250 reimbursement or stipend for art materials/shipping/other local costs as needed. Facilities include wireless internet, piano, printing presses, HD video equipment, sound system, light board and theatre lights, and workshop equipment. Artists are expected to provide an artist talk, a community engagement component, and/or contribute a work of art created during the residency for installation, exhibit, performance, reading, screening or other upon mutual agreement with Bunnell's Artistic Director. Application deadline is October 31 annually. Submit 3-5 images, and up to 3 audio files and 2 video files.
