About This Call

Bunnell Street Arts Center presents an Artist in Residence program for international, US, and Alaskan artists to create artwork that promotes community engagement and creative placemaking strategies. The program seeks artists who aim to strengthen the social, physical, and economic fabric of Homer through the arts by addressing pertinent themes including decolonization, resource management and sustainability, accessibility, inclusion, skills sharing and exchange, enhancing the safety and security of local residents, and artistic strategies to build connections between local and global communities. Artist-led projects may feature community engagement through social and civic practice, sculpture, creative writing, moving image, movement, music, painting, performance, ephemeral art, installation, and poetry.

Bunnell Street Arts Center is a multidisciplinary arts center located in a landmark building overlooking Kachemak Bay and the Kenai Mountains. The residency offers one-month stays with an average of 3 artists in residence at a time. Housing includes a private bedroom in a shared facility with a shared kitchen and living area. The artist studio is Bunnell's main exhibition gallery, open to the public during regular gallery hours Monday-Saturday and is not private. Facilities include wireless internet, nipping press, small printing press, HD/3D video projector, and HD video camera.

Residency benefits include a $1,000 stipend for one month, up to $1,000 value for round-trip coach travel to Homer, $250 for art materials, and lodging. The application fee is $25. Artists must provide an artist talk, a workshop, and contribute at least one work of art created during the residency for installation, exhibit, performance, reading, screening, or other such event upon consultation with the artist. The residency runs from February 1, 2018 to May 1, 2019. Contact: [email protected], (907) 235-2662. Located at 106 W. Bunnell Ave, Homer, AK 99603.
