Alaska Watercolor Society 44th Annual Juried Exhibition

The Alaska Watercolor Society, formed in 1974 as a not-for-profit organization, sponsors an annual juried watercolor exhibition open to all artists 18 years and older living in the United States. The 44th Annual Juried Exhibition will be held at 2 Friends Gallery, 341 E Benson Boulevard, Anchorage, Alaska from August 3–30, 2018.

Eligibility: Open to artists 18 years or older living in the United States. Paintings must be primarily aqua media (watercolor, acrylic, casein, gouache, egg tempera, water-based ink, and water-soluble crayon or pencil) over any flat, two-dimensional surface, matted and framed under clear acrylic or glass. Water-soluble oil media are not allowed. If pastel or paper collage is used, it must be in conjunction with aqua media with aqua media as the dominant element. Work is limited to two entries per artist. Works previously shown in an AKWS juried exhibition are disqualified. Works must be original and less than 2 years old, with minimum image size 8x10 inches and maximum 22x30 inches. Paintings done under instruction are allowed if the choice or arrangement of subject matter is the artist's and the teacher has not painted on the work.

Submission: Digital entries through CaFE.org must be received by June 1, 2018 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Entry fee is $30 for one or two paintings (nonrefundable). Images must be correctly oriented, show the full picture without frame or mat, and faithfully reproduce the original painting. Accepted entries must be matted and framed under clear glass or acrylic with white or off-white mat surfaces. Colored inner mats are acceptable up to 0.5 inches maximum width. Frames should be no wider than 4 inches and simple in design. All accepted entries must be hand-delivered; out-of-town artists may arrange delivery through an AKWS volunteer for a $50 fee with prepaid return postage. Juror John Salminen will select paintings for awards exceeding $5,000 in 2017, with $1,500 for Best in Show. Acceptance notifications will be emailed the week of July 1st. Opening reception is August 3, 5:00–8:00 p.m. Works must be for sale; 2 Friends Gallery retains 50% commission on sales.
