About This Call

The Alaska Watercolor Society, formed in 1974 as a not-for-profit organization, sponsors an annual juried watercolor exhibition open to all artists 18 years and older living in the United States.

The 43rd Annual Juried Exhibition will be held at Conoco Phillips Gallery, Alaska Pacific University (APU) Grant Hall, 4101 University Drive, Anchorage, from August 4–30, 2017. The opening reception is August 4, 5:00 pm–8:00 pm. Juror Kathleen Conover will select awards on August 8, with a juror's lecture on August 10 at the BP Energy Center. Paintings must be primarily aqua media (watercolor, acrylic, casein, gouache, egg tempera, water-based ink, and water-soluble crayon or pencil) on any flat, two-dimensional surface, matted and framed under clear acrylic or glass. Water-soluble oil media are not allowed. If pastel or paper collage is used, it must be in conjunction with aqua media with aqua media as the dominant element. Work is limited to two entries per artist. Paintings must be original, minimum 8x10 inches, maximum 22x30 inches, and less than 2 years old. Works previously shown in an AKWS juried exhibition are disqualified.

Entry fee is $30 for one or two paintings (nonrefundable). Digital submissions through CaFE.org must be received by June 2, 2017 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Accepted entries must be hand-delivered; an AKWS volunteer will accept and return paintings from out-of-town artists for a $50 service fee. All accepted paintings must be matted and framed under clear glass or acrylic with white or off-white mat surfaces. Frames should be no wider than 4 inches and simple in design. Paintings must be prewired for hanging. Works must be for sale; APU ConocoPhillips Gallery retains a 30% commission on all sales. Awards in 2016 exceeded $5,000 with $1,500 for Best in Show. Acceptance notifications will be emailed the week of July 3rd. For further information, contact John Beebee at (907) 333-2563 or [email protected].
