About This Call
Alaska Statewide Youth Art & Writing Competition invites creative teens in grades 7-12 to submit work in art and writing categories. The entry fee is $5.00, with fee waivers available upon request. Entrants can submit up to six images or writing entries per registration. Submissions are judged locally by 49 Writers for writing entries and artist/UAA art instructor Jimmy Riordan for art entries.
Writing categories include Short Fiction, Non Fiction, Science Fiction, Flash Fiction, Humor, Essay, Poetry, Journalism, and Novel Excerpt, each with specified word limits. Art categories include Painting, Photography, Ceramics and Glass, Comic Art, Mixed Media, Sculpture, Drawing, and Print Making. Winners will be announced by February 17, 2013, and the top two winners (one writing, one art) receive full scholarship and airfare for two weeks at Sitka Fine Arts Summer Camp in Sitka, AK. Additional awards include the F Magazine Editor's Choice Award and Judges' Choice Scholarship Award for one writing and one art entrant.
Winning work will be published in the April issue of F Magazine, showcased at Out North Contemporary Art House in Anchorage on March 15-16, and winning writers will have their work read aloud by experienced readers and actors with the event streamed online. Art judges will make first-round decisions by January 25, 2013, and entrants must mail physical artwork to F Magazine with a post date no later than February 4, 2013. Final judging for art submissions will be completed by February 17, 2013. High-resolution images (at least 300 dpi) must be submitted by February 20 for publication consideration. A signed waiver must be mailed to F Magazine to be considered for the competition.
