About This Call

The Alaska State Council on the Arts is requesting qualifications from artists for interior and/or exterior artwork to be commissioned for the new State of Alaska Library, Archives and Museum (SLAM) in Juneau, Alaska. This RFQ is open to all professional artists residing in the United States. Applicants must be practicing visual artists; applications from architects, landscape architects, or other design professionals will not be considered unless included as part of an artist-led team. Submitted applications will be judged competitively, with up to three finalists selected for locations described in the RFQ. Finalists invited to propose may be interviewed and will be provided with plans and paid to develop detailed design proposals.

The total art budget is $800,000 USD, based on anticipated funding for completed building Phases 1, 2, and 3. The current art budget representing Phases 1 and 2 is $500,000. Phase 3 is currently not funded and subject to legislative appropriation, anticipated for July 2013. Selected artists' budgets will include all costs of design, engineering, fabrication, installation, artwork transportation, special handling fees, special lighting (if any), photographic documentation, liability and automobile insurance, and an identifying plaque. State laws related to public construction, including licensing, insurance, bonding, and payment of prevailing wage rates, may apply.

Artwork should encompass the dynamic of an integrated facility with the mission of preservation and presentation of Alaska's stories from all regions of the state. Artwork must be designed for durability and minimal maintenance, compatible with Juneau's climate conditions including rainfall, Taku winds, and snowfall/freezing conditions. Areas of circulation and public access around artwork must be ADA compliant. Applicants must submit: a one-page letter of interest describing their approach to public art and connection to project themes; 10 digital images of past work created in the past 10-15 years; a resume no more than two pages; and names, titles, and phone numbers for three professional references.
