About This Call
The Alaska State Council on the Arts is requesting qualifications from Alaska artists for interior and exterior artwork to be commissioned for the Palmer State Office Building, located in Palmer, Alaska. This RFQ is open only to Alaska artists.
The Alaska State Council on the Arts is seeking artwork that emphasizes a connection to or theme of heritage in relation to the environment of the Matanuska region, with elements that are contemporary or modern and appropriate for a State office facility. Project opportunities may include suspended artwork, wall-based 2D (paintings, mosaics) or 3D (relief carvings, wall-hung sculpture). The total art budget is $80,000 USD, with individual art project budgets covering a wide range. Selected artists' budgets will include all costs of design, engineering, fabrication, installation, artwork transportation, special handling fees, special lighting (if any), photographic documentation, liability and automobile insurance, and an identifying plaque made to ASCA standards and specifications. State laws related to public construction, including licensing, insurance, bonding, and payment of prevailing wage rates, may apply.
Up to five semi-finalists may be selected for each location. Semi-finalists will be provided with plans and paid to develop a detailed design proposal. Artists may be considered for more than one location and/or site. Installation dates will be staggered prior to August 30, 2011 depending on sites, artists and media selected. Artwork must be permanent and designed to last the life of the building (50 years). Routine maintenance and display considerations must be minimal. Replacement features, such as special lighting, must be commercially available in Alaska.
Application requirements include: a short letter of interest (no more than two pages) describing your approach to making art for the public realm, location preference(s), how your medium would work at the designated locations, your approach to the project, how your work is priced, and an approximate budget; 10 digital images; and a current resume (no more than three pages) that includes three professional references. Contact Andrea Noble at [email protected], 907-269-6610, or toll free in Alaska at 888-278-7424 for additional information.
