About This Call
The Alaska State Council on the Arts is requesting qualifications from Alaska artists only for interior wall-hung artwork to be commissioned for three facilities: Hoonah Ferry Terminal in Hoonah, DEC Seafood & Food Safety Lab in Anchorage, and Fairbanks Pioneer Home in Fairbanks. This RFQ is open to all professional artists residing in Alaska. Applications will be accepted online only through CaFÉ at www.callforentry.org. All applications will be considered for all three facilities through three separate committee reviews. Finalists may be interviewed and provided with plans, paid to develop detailed design proposals, and meet with art committees to discuss design ideas.
The total art budget is $12,785 USD, distributed as follows: Hoonah Ferry Terminal ($8,000), DEC Seafood & Food Safety Lab ($1,500), and Fairbanks Pioneer Home ($3,285). Selected artists' budgets will include all costs of design, engineering, fabrication, installation, artwork transportation, special handling fees, special lighting if any, framing, photographic documentation, liability and automobile insurance, and an identifying plaque. State laws related to public construction, including licensing, insurance, bonding, and payment of prevailing wage rates, may apply.
For Hoonah Ferry Terminal, the Art Selection Committee seeks artwork emphasizing connection to heritage or relation to the region's environment, with contemporary or modern elements appropriate for a state transportation facility. For the DEC Seafood & Food Safety Lab, artwork should be visually appealing and intriguing for building occupants. For Fairbanks Pioneer Home, the committee is interested in imagery that is calming, contemplative, relaxing and organic, conveying a nurturing environment.
Artwork must be wall-hung and designed for permanent installation lasting the life of the building. Maintenance must not require special equipment or extra duties by staff. Expected installation dates are prior to September 30, 2012 or as soon as artwork is complete and installation can be coordinated with facility staff. Artists must submit a one-page letter of interest, 10 digital images of past work created in the past 10 years, a resume no more than two pages, and names and contact information for three professional references. Selection criteria include quality and originality of past work, durability and maintenance requirements, and past projects demonstrating ability to complete work on time and coordinate with construction timelines.
