About This Call
The Alaska State Council on the Arts is requesting qualifications from artists for interior artwork to be commissioned for the Department of Fish and Game - Kodiak Near Island Research Administration Facility located in Kodiak, Alaska. This RFQ is open to all professional artists residing in the United States. Applications will be judged on a competitive basis from which up to five semi-finalists may be selected for one or multiple locations. Semi-finalists invited to propose may be interviewed, provided with plans, and paid to develop detailed design proposals and/or meet with the art committee to discuss design ideas.
The total art budget is $150,000 USD and may be divided to commission interior artworks. Selected artists' budgets will include all costs of design, engineering, fabrication, installation, artwork transportation, special handling fees, special lighting (if any), photographic documentation, liability and automobile insurance, and an identification plaque made to ASCA standards and specifications. State laws related to public construction, including licensing, insurance, bonding, and payment of prevailing wage rates, may apply.
The facility is a state-of-the-art campus for management and research of fisheries and wildlife, housing research and management components for the Finfish, Shellfish, Groundfish, Sport Fish and Wildlife divisions of ADF&G along with administrative offices and IT support services. The art selection committee is interested in public artwork that expresses the variety of fish and wildlife resources in the upland, coastal and marine environments of this region and the cultural, recreational, and commercial uses and users of those resources, and conveys ADF&G's mission to protect, maintain, and ensure sustainability of fish and wildlife resources. Artwork must be permanent and designed to last the life of the building (50 years). Routine maintenance requirements must be minimal, and artwork must be designed so that maintenance does not require special equipment or extra duties performed by staff.
Submission requirements include a one-page letter of interest describing your approach to making art for the public realm, how your work connects to the project themes, why your medium would work well with the building, and how your work is priced or a budget range of past work. Applicants must also submit 10 digital images of past work. Timeline: Request for Proposals - May 30, 2013; Finalist Selection - June 28, 2013; Artwork Installation - On or before August 31, 2014.
