About This Call

The Alaska State Council on the Arts, on behalf of the State of Alaska Department of Natural Resources, is requesting qualifications from professional artists residing in Alaska for interior wall-hung artwork to be commissioned for the renovated Geological Materials Center Building in Anchorage. The artwork will be installed in the green entry lobby, which measures approximately 28 feet long by 10 feet tall. The selected artist's work should relate to the geology and resource development of Alaska, the geological evolution of Alaska, or how technology and economy are linked to geology in Alaska.

The total art budget is $47,000 USD for one commissioned interior artwork. This budget includes all costs of design, framing, fabrication, installation, artwork transportation, special handling fees, special lighting if needed, photographic documentation, liability and automobile insurance, and an identifying plaque. The artwork must be large scale, permanent, and designed to last the life of the building. Maintenance should require minimal special equipment or extra duties. Expected installation date is on or before December 2015. Artwork of all media will be considered, and preference will be given to new commissions.

Applications must include: a one-page letter of interest describing your approach to public art, connection to the project themes, why your medium suits this building, and your pricing or budget range; 10 digital images of completed work from the past 10-15 years; a resume no more than two pages listing projects from the past 10-15 years; and names, titles, and phone numbers for three professional references. One to five finalists may be selected and could be interviewed. Finalists may be considered for more than one location or site. The Geologic Materials Center is located at 3651 Penland Parkway, Anchorage, AK 99508.
