About This Call

The Alaska State Council on the Arts, on behalf of the Lower Kuskokwim School District, is requesting qualifications for exterior artwork to be commissioned for the K-12 Amaqigciq Elementary/Caputnguaq High School in Chefornak, Alaska. This opportunity is open to professional artists residing in Alaska only. The deadline for entries is Friday, April 19, 2013 at 9:59 p.m. Alaska Daylight Savings Time. Applications are accepted online only through CaFÉ at www.callforentry.org.

The total art budget is $159,000 USD for one exterior wall with multiple sites. The selected artist's budget will include all costs of design, engineering, fabrication, installation, artwork transportation, special handling fees, special lighting (if any), photographic documentation, liability and automobile insurance, and an identifying plaque. State laws related to public construction, including licensing, insurance, bonding, and payment of prevailing wage rates, may apply. Up to five finalists may be selected for interviews and will be provided with plans and paid to develop detailed design proposals.

Artwork is to be installed on the high wall on the east side of the building facing the community boardwalk, with an expected installation date prior to August 31, 2013. The overall theme should reflect the environment and celebrate the natural resources of coastal tundra western Alaska while emphasizing the educational atmosphere of the school. The installed artwork must be permanent and designed to last the life of the building, using only durable media. Design considerations include seismic requirements (the school is in seismic use group III), ADA compliance for circulation areas, and maintenance that does not require special equipment.

Applications must include: a one-page letter of interest describing your approach to public art, connection to project themes, why your medium suits the building, and how your work is priced; 10 digital images of completed past work; a resume no more than two pages; and names, titles, and phone numbers for three professional references. Contact Andrea Noble-Pelant at [email protected] or 907-269-6610 for additional information.
