About This Call
The AVTEC Public Art Selection Committee requests qualifications from artists for interior and exterior public art at the new Culinary Academy facility located at 516 3rd Avenue, Seward, Alaska. Artists may be considered for more than one site. Applications will be judged competitively, with up to five semi-finalists selected for each site. Finalists will be paid to develop a final proposal. The Art Selection Committee is interested in artwork that is uplifting, cheery, and reflects culinary themes. Themes that remain current over time are preferred. Artwork should complement existing architectural materials, style, and color scheme.
The new facility is a 13,000 square foot addition with 3 levels, scheduled for completion in August 2010. Seven sites are available for artwork: exterior entry area, exterior handrail/guardrail (durable metal, compliant with 2006 International Building Code and ADA requirements), exterior themed art at level 0 entrance, interior whiteboard cover (8'-0"W x 4'-0"H, hinged), open stairwell, miscellaneous interior locations in dining and conference areas, and windows on the second floor. Outdoor temperatures fluctuate between 80°F in summer and minus 10°F in winter. All installations must be permanent and designed to last 50 years with minimal maintenance requirements.
The total budget for commissioned artwork is up to $62,000 USD. Selected artists' budgets must include all costs of design, engineering, fabrication, installation, artwork transportation, special handling fees, special lighting (if any), photographic documentation, liability and automobile insurance, and an identifying plaque. State laws related to public construction, including licensing, insurance, bonding, and prevailing wage rates, may apply. Selection criteria include quality, appropriateness, and originality of past work; durability and maintenance requirements; and references attesting to qualifications. Installation dates will be negotiated individually with each commissioned artist, with coordination required before August 2010. Submit 10 digital or slide images with letter of interest and resume.
