Alaska Positive 2016

Alaska Positive 2016 is a statewide juried photographic exhibition organized and toured by the Alaska State Museum. Its purpose is to encourage the practice of photography as an art form in Alaska. The exhibition will open in Juneau and travel throughout Alaska, concluding a statewide tour in 2017. The juror is Larry McNeil, whose art explores the intersection of cultures, American mythology, irony, and satire. McNeil is from the Dakl'aweidi Kéet Gooshi Hít, Killer Whale Fin House in Klukwan Alaska, one of the oldest Tlingit clan houses on the Northwest Coast.

The competition is open to any resident of the State of Alaska. Only photographs not shown in previous statewide juried competitions are eligible. Any work using photographic processes is eligible, provided it is original work completed within the last three years. Entries may only be submitted by the artist. Each person may enter up to four photographic works. The entry fee is $25.00. Digital submissions are due September 23, 2016 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Selected artists will be notified and must submit exhibition-ready matted photographs by October 19, 2016 at 4:00 p.m. to the Alaska State Museum, 395 Whittier Street, Juneau, Alaska 99801. Artwork must be matted with white or natural white museum board; framed entries will not be accepted.

Awards include a $300 Juror's Choice Award and two $150 Awards of Recognition, sponsored by the Friends of the State Library, Archives, and Museum. The juror will also select photographs for Honorable Mention. The exhibit opens November 4, 2016 at the Alaska State Museum and travels to museums and galleries throughout Alaska in January 2017. All accepted works may remain in the exhibition through November 2017. The Museum carries insurance against loss or damage on the premises and in transit for the traveling exhibit. All entries except those purchased will be returned to the artist postage-paid by the museum.
