About This Call

Alameda County's Percent-for-Art Program commissions professional artists to create small-scale, wall-mounted artwork for capital improvement projects. This call invites artists to join the Artist Registry, which will remain in effect for two years. Artists selected for the Registry will be notified prior to consideration for specific projects. The Registry is for artists making small to mid-sized, wall-mounted, two-dimensional or low-relief artwork.

Eligibility: The Artist Registry is open to professional artists who live, are permanently employed, or rent/own an artist's studio in Alameda County. Proof of residence, permanent employment, or business ownership within County borders is required. Artists must maintain continuous residence or employment in Alameda County from application through final acceptance of artwork. Ineligible applicants include: artists who have received contracts for artwork at the Juvenile Justice Center or Castro Valley Library, artists with 6 or more artworks in the Alameda County Art Collection, artists who have received a Small-Scale Artwork commission in the past, and Alameda County employees.

Commission Details: Individual contracts generally range from $4,000 to $20,000 for one new artwork or a series of artworks (approximately 3-5). Commissioned artwork typically ranges from 11" x 11" to no more than 50" x 50" and may be no more than 3" in depth, with a maximum weight of 25 lbs. The Arts Commission manages framing and installation costs. Artists' budgets must include all costs for concept, design, fabrication, insurance, taxes, licenses, permits, and subcontractor services.

Upcoming Projects: Highland Hospital Acute Care Tower Replacement, Phase 1 (Oakland, CA) with a total public art budget of $500,000, and San Lorenzo Library (San Lorenzo, CA) with a total public art budget of $4,000.

Application Requirements: Submit online through CaFÉ at www.callforentry.org. No application fee. Required materials include: letter of interest, ten images of past work, annotated image list with artwork details, current résumé (maximum four pages), three professional references with contact information, and artist category selection (Emerging, Mid-Career, or Established Artist).
