About This Call

Alameda County's capital improvement projects include a Percent-for-Art Program in which professional artists are commissioned to make permanent, site-specific public artwork. Due to upcoming construction projects, artists will be selected from a registry of pre-qualified artists (Artist Registry). The opportunities may include exterior and interior projects, be appropriate for artists working in a variety of materials and styles, and have a range of project budgets. The Registry will remain in effect for two years. Artists selected for the Artist Registry will be notified prior to being placed into consideration for specific projects. This Registry is for artists qualified to make permanent, site-specific work; a separate call is being announced for artists making small to mid-sized, wall-mounted, two-dimensional or low relief artwork.

The Artist Registry is open to professional artists who reside in the state of California. Artists who have received contracts for site-specific, permanent artwork at the Juvenile Justice Center or Castro Valley Library are not eligible, as are artists who have 6 or more artworks in the Alameda County Art Collection. Alameda County employees are not eligible to apply. Individual contracts generally range from approximately $20,000 to $200,000, including all costs associated with concept, design, site preparation, fabrication, transportation, installation, insurance, taxes, licenses, permits, and subcontractor services.

Applications must be submitted online through the CaFÉ website (www.callforentry.org) with no application fee. Required materials include: a letter of interest describing relevant public art experience and philosophy; ten images of past work; an annotated image list with artwork details; a current résumé not exceeding four pages; and names, affiliations, addresses, email addresses and phone numbers of three professional references. For artist teams, résumés and references must be submitted for each applicant. A Selection Committee of arts professionals will review applications and recommend artists for the Registry, which must be approved by the Public Art Advisory Committee and the Arts Commission. All applicants will be notified of selection results.
