About This Call

AIR at Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator supports research-led Los Angeles based artists working with climate change and related themes. The program is seeking three interdisciplinary artists for a six month residency in the Arts District, running approximately May - November 2019, with a culminating work-in-progress exhibition in December 2019.

Residency benefits include a $13,000 total stipend ($11,000 over 6 months plus $1,000 one-time materials stipend and up to $1,000 consumables stipend) to research and develop artwork centered around climate change, sustainability and related themes. Residents receive full access to over $10M of prototyping equipment in the Advanced Prototyping Center (APC), training for equipment (no previous experience necessary), and access to leading minds working in agriculture, environment, energy, transportation, waste, water and related themes.

Eligibility: AIR is for Los Angeles artists only with a minimum of three years residency in the Los Angeles area preferred. Artists must have completed education a minimum of five years prior to applying or display equivalent professional experience. Current students and recent graduates are not eligible. Artists must be available during LACI business hours (Monday-Friday, 9am-7pm) and present on campus 12 hours or more per week for the entire six month residency. Artists must maintain their own studio or home workspace throughout the residency. Work must have the capacity to raise awareness around climate change, sustainability and related themes. Individual artists only; artist teams and assistants cannot be accommodated. Residents must participate in a 5-day full-time APC training, create a limited edition work using APC equipment (minimum 12 + APs, with half retained by artist and half donated to LACI), participate in a work-in-progress exhibition and group panel discussion, attend monthly status meetings, and may be requested to host studio visits. Artists retain full copyright of their work at all times. Applications are judged on project potential to benefit from LACI's technical and intellectual capital, capacity to stimulate dialogue around climate change and sustainability, potential to engage collaborative environment, commitment to ongoing creative practice, potential for growth in research-led environment, and ability to articulate ideas clearly.
