Against the Grain

Against the Grain is a juried exhibition held at Strata Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico, running from January 4 - February 5, 2022. The exhibition focuses on work that counters contemporary tendencies or fashions in recent visual art. Such work might be unconventional in terms of materials, format, representational methods, concept, emotional range, visual, cultural or historical references, viewpoint, politics, narrative, subject matter, or composition.

Artists working in painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, photography, and mixed media are eligible to submit. The entry fee is $35 for three works, with $10 per additional entry (maximum of six works total). All artwork must be ready to hang/display with proper hardware. Wall-mounted work has a maximum size of 40x40 inches (12 inches deep for wall-mounted sculpture) and maximum weight of 25 lbs. Submitted work must remain available for the duration of the exhibit. Submissions must include 3-6 images in .jpg format with annotations including artist name, title, date of completion, medium, dimensions in inches (height x width x depth), and price.

The juror is Stephanie Jacinto, Assistant Director at Strata Gallery. Prizes include $200 for Best of Show, $150 for Director's Choice, and $50 for Honorable Mention (3 awards). Submission deadline is November 20, 2021. Notification of accepted works will be sent December 4, 2021, with works due at the gallery by December 21, 2021. Unsold works will be picked up/returned February 6, 2022.
