After Nature at Art Works Downtown

After Nature at Art Works Downtown is a juried exhibition exploring artists' engagement with nature and scientific research specimens, as well as the intersection of nature and human influence in the Anthropocene Epoch. The exhibition's title references both the tradition of still life painting and Jedediah Purdy's 2015 book "After Nature: Politics for the Anthropocene." Juror Sharon Bliss, Interim Director at Fine Arts Gallery, San Francisco State University, will select approximately 30 artworks from applications, with one work by Tiffany Bozic and Stephanie Peek pre-selected by the juror.

Eligibility is limited to San Francisco Bay Area artists only (artist must live within 100 miles from San Rafael, California). The exhibition is open to all visual arts media, with the following requirements: artwork must not exceed 72" by any dimension including frame and all materials; original artwork only (no giclees or reproductions, though editions are acceptable); video must include player, monitor, and earphones (projections are prohibited); and submissions must not have previously exhibited in the AWD 1337 Gallery. Entry fee is $40 for a maximum of 3 entries, with a discount provided for AWD Artist Members. Work samples may include up to 3 images and/or up to 3 videos, with a minimum of 1 total sample required.

Deadline for entries via CallForEntry.org is March 16, 2018 at 4pm (11:59pm Mountain time). Notification by email will be sent March 23 or 24. Accepted work must be hand-delivered to Art Works Downtown, 1337 Fourth Street, San Rafael between 1pm-4pm on April 14. The reception and 2nd Friday Art Walk is May 11, 5-8pm. Unsold artwork pickup is June 2, 10am-12noon. Art Works Downtown accepts a 40% donation upon sale. Artists who do not retrieve their work will be charged a storage fee of $1.00 per day, and works remaining after 30 days become property of Art Works Downtown.
