Afrofuturism and Hip Hop: A Way Forward

The James Wise Gallery at Norfolk State University is conducting a national call for art, inviting artists to submit works that incorporate Afrofuturism and the essence of hip-hop. Selected artworks will display visual interpretations that reflect the spirit of Afrofuturism and incorporate one of the pillars/elements of hip-hop and celebrate artistic diversity on a broader scale. This exhibition is open to artists of all mediums, including but not limited to drawing, painting, prints, photography, sculpture, fiber, digital, and mixed media. The exhibition is open to international artists.

Artists may submit up to three artworks created within the last two years. Submissions should include images of the artwork(s), an artist statement, and an artist biography. Work samples may include 1-3 images, 0-3 audio files, and 0-3 video files (minimum 1 total sample required). The entry fee is $30 for up to three artworks. All fees are nonrefundable. Jurying will be done blindly, with the juror judging solely based on the image of the submitted artwork without knowing the identity of the artist.

Entry Deadline: February 12, 2024 at 11:59 p.m. MST. Jury deliberation begins February 8 with accepted artists notified by email beginning February 9. Artwork must be at the James Wise Gallery by February 20. Exhibition Dates: February 26 – March 28, 2024. Awards: Best of Show - $500, First Place - $300, Second Place - $200, Third Place - $100, and Honorable Mention.
